Presentación

Serena Todesco (1980) is a researcher and literary translator, currently living in Zagreb (Croatia), after a few years spent between Italy, Belgium and Ireland.

She holds a PhD in Italian Literature (University College Cork, 2013), an MA in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies (University of Limerick, 2008), a DESS in Translation and Language Industries (Isti, Brussels 2005), and a Degree in Translation and Interpreting (Università degli Studi di Bologna-Forlì, 2003).

Her research interests include psychoanalysis and feminist literary theory, representations of motherhood in Italian contemporary prose, Julia Kristeva’s Abjection theory, canon and anticanonical presences in Sicilian literature, women’s historical fiction and feminine Italian 20th-century prose writing. She has published on the historical fiction of Emma Donoghue and on the works of Maria Attanasio; a comprehensive monography about genre and gender in Sicilian contemporary historical fiction came out in 2017 («Tracce a margine», Pungitopo Editore).

She is currently preparing another monography on Maria Rosa Cutrufelli and working as a co-editor of two online volumes to be published in 2020, with ISSA (University of South Africa) and Rivista di Studi Italiani respectively. Another project in preparation concerns identity, gender and the South in contemporary Italian literature, and it will involve several women authors from the Meridione.

As a literary translator, she has published on Italian magazines such as Semicerchio, Tratti, El Ghibli and La Libellula, and worked in collaboration with several poetry festivals around Europe. Her translations include poetry by Silvestar Vrljić, Irena Delonga and Ana Brnardić (Croatia), Kapka Kassabova (UK), Nikola Madzirov (Macedonia), Arundhati Subramaniam (India), Roberta Bertozzi, Fabio Orrico, Pier Damiano Ori, Sara Ventroni, Claudio Pozzani (Italy) and, in co-translation with William Wall, Rosaria Lo Russo (Italy). Together with Silvestar Vrljić, she has also edited a Croatian/English anthology by Singaporean poet Alvin Pang, entitled «Other Things and Other Poems» (Brutal 2012).
